Everyone's Agnostic Podcast (atheism)
Cass Midgley interviews people you don't know about a subject no one wants to talk about--losing faith in the supernatural.
Episode 110 Aaron - Blind & closeted gay/atheist preacher's kid

Cass and Bob interview a young atheist, gay, blind man named Aaron. His father is a Wesleyan minister in North Carolina. His parents and two siblings, all Christian, do not know he’s gay or atheist. At 20 years of age and being blind, he lives at home and his only connection with people that truly know him and accept him is online.  He’s currently in college; he’s a computer programmer. At no point does Aaron exude any sense of self-pity. In fact, he’s quite chipper. He does, however, help us reap the benefit of better understanding his experience. If you’d like to reach out and connect with Aaron, I’m sure it would life his spirits. His email is pretty simple: aaron@atheist.com.  Also, if you’re wondering how I blind person discovers they’re gay—in a culture driven by looks—we talk about that. Bear with us through the first 3 minutes of the interview; we had some audio problems but it gets better after that.

Episode 108 Marie LePage

Cass and Bob interview Marie LePage.

Early in the interview, Marie confesses that as she was graduating from high school, she seriously doubted her own intellect, so between that and her obsession with kingdom things, she decided against college and instead entered the mission field with YWAM. She also admitted that just 2 years ago she wouldn’t have had the confidence to come on a podcast like this, but the Marie we witness here today is really bright, really courageous, and is all out fucks for the cultural standards that oppressed as a woman for the first 30 years of her life—and she expressly says so in this episode. She drops more f-bombs than any guest in our history, even more than me.

What this episode brings up for me is the power and maturation that BEGINS when one leaves an oppressive Christianity. There are Christianities that postpone one’s maturation. This has largely to do with the absence of personal responsibility, the surrendering of autonomy and decision making and problem solving to God. I get the sense that in the last 6 years, since I resolved there were no gods, that it’s just us here, and I joined the human race and reality, that for the first time in my life, at age 50, the wheels and gears of the natural maturation process, the wisdom that comes from truly being a student of life, that were suspended by Christianity, have begun turning again and I’m becoming something and emerging as a truly free, self-determining agent and a true steward of my life. It’s really exciting to see myself emerging and get to know myself and to garner this power to embrace my identity, which is intentionally surrendered in Christianity. “You are not your own, you’ve been bought with a price.” “your body belongs to god” “your mind belongs to god” Coming out from under voluntary serfdom and into free agency has been one of the biggest positives of deconverting. No, I do not think I’m god, no, this is not pride…this is just getting honest with reality and shedding the fairy tale narrative that there ever was a god who was in charge of everything.  The “how now shall I live” goes from horrifying to a most exciting thing to explore.  What Marie calls, “re-owning my brain.”

Episode 105 Ex-Jehovah Witness "Revan"

Today Bob and Cass interview the first ex-Jehovah Witness on the podcast who goes by the name Revan. He is not entirely out yet. He blogs as Atheists on Parade. Revan is a details guy. You’ll find that whether it’s the history of the Jehovah Witness religion or Darwin’s Theory of Evolution, Revan reads and learns everything he can find on the subjects. He even forced himself to learn things that he knew he wouldn’t appreciate at that point in his deconstruction. In fact, he’s says it was very painful for him to subject himself to ideas that were opposed to his current views, but he did it anyway. This is where courage plays a big role in our deconversions. At some point in all our deconstructions, we had to muster the courage to read or watch or listen to something we KNEW in advance was going to hurt. And by hurt we mean it was going to stab some things we had held dear and regarded as true for decades, often since our childhood. These are things we do because we know it’s the right thing to do in spite of the pain. This is what Revan describes as agonizing, and many of us did the same, to get to the place we are now, which is free to think for ourselves, and get out from the tyranny of group-think.

Episode 96 Jeremy from Minnesota

Cass and Bob interview Jeremy from Minnesota. We interview people you don’t know about a subject no one wants to talk about: leaving faith. Two symbolic masks are traditionally associated with drama and they represent the ancient Greek Muses, Thalia (for comedy) and Melpomene (for tragedy). Jeremy’s story reminds us of these dual emotions. He’s a lover and a fighter, in that you’ll see his big heart and he’s a martial artist; he’s happier than ever to be out from under religious tyranny and he’s broken hearted that it’s effects still impair so many lives, including his own; and he’s an engaged homeschooling father who’s children request he sing speed metal to them before bed.

Episode 95 Anthony Magnabosco

Cass and Bob interview Anthony Magnabosco. Anthony practices and teaches a discipline called “street epistemology.” He investigates the origin and formation of people’s god-beliefs, of those he meets on the street who are willing to talk to him about that on camera. His YouTube channel contains videos of Anthony doing Street Epistemology and has over 10,000 subscribers. He was inspired by Dr. Peter Begosian’s book, “A Manual for Creating Atheists,” which is NOT just about deconverting people, it’s about truly listening, respectfully to another human being’s strongly held beliefs, and investigating the source of their confidence.

Cass and Bob interview David Silverman, the President of American Atheists, and author of his new book, “Fighting God.” David comes down hard on the name of this podcast but we work through our differences. Episode 79 Gayle Jordan

Cass & Dr. Bob interview Gayle Jordan. Gayle is the founder of our local Murfreesboro Freethinkers, now over 600 members strong. She’s a mover and shaker and someone to watch in the atheist movement. Raised southern Baptist, her deconversion was parallel with her own mid-life health and fitness awakening. As she turned 40 she decided to study the science of personal health, where she bumped into a lot of science which included evolution. Between this and her children’s questions about Bible assertions, her confidence in Christianity unraveled. In the meantime she earned a law degree and strengthened her body enough to complete the Iron Man Triathlon.

Episode 57: Lydia Allan

Bob and Cass interview one of the most exciting new voices in atheist podcasting, Lydia Allan. David Smalley, of the ground-breaking podcast Dogma Debate, discovered Lydia as she was speaking at a local freethinkers meetup in Dallas. He was so impressed with her that he approached to come on his show as a regular co-host and we all benefit from his intuition. Her undergraduate degree was in Psychology, she holds two Masters degrees in Neuroscience and  ? and is currently working on a PhD in The History and Philosophy of Science.

In the spirit of “the more you know, the more you realize you don’t know,” Lydia bears a refreshing humility while be very smart and well educated and even feisty at times. She’s exactly the kind of voice we want at the table. One of the best mixes of learned, empathic, angry, and compassionate I’ve ever interviewed.  I think you’re going to like this talk.

One year birthday of the Everyone's Agnostic podcast! This week we feature Dr. Sheldon Solomon lecturing on Ernest Becker's Pulitzer Prize winner book, "The Denial of Death." Becker reveals how and why we humans look to constructed narratives to ease our anxiety around death. This is the crux of why we need religion and why we so easily feel threatened by those with different beliefs. If this won't change your life, nothing will.

This episode was recorded on June 27th, 2015. Our opening monologue is an excerpt from a Youtube called “Towering Mountain of Ignorance” by Hank Green. The opening music is “never know” by Jack Johnson, and The musical segues on this episode were written and performed by Cass Midgley.

Episode 51 Bob & Cass on Charleston

We discuss the murders in Charleston last week and how some people refuse to talk about the true motive of the crime. I believe religion plays a role in this and many other denials of reality. And speaking of beliefs, we discuss what would happen if we shed all beliefs. As a result of this talk, Cass decides to fast from beliefs for a season to see what effect it has on his life.

Episode 49 American Atheist Convention 2015

Back on April 4th, I taped a few random interviews at the American Atheist Convention in Memphis, so today I’m posting a few selections from that experience.

The first is a 9 minute interview with Dave Kong. Dave was personal friends with Madalyn Murray O’Hare, the founder of American Atheists and has witnessed the movement from the beginning. He served on the board for 27 years. And for those who may have little exposure to Madalyn, I’ve posted an 11 minute excerpt from a speech she gave at the 1972 AA convention, 10 years after she founded the movement. .

Next is a 6 minute interview with comedian Keith Lowell Jensen who performed a stand-up routine at the conference. I tacked on a 3 minute excerpt of a bit he performed there. Keith has his own podcast called, “It’s Funny Because” available on iTunes and Facebook.

Lastly, I play a fascinating talk given by Dr. Jennifer Michael Hecht called Poetic Atheism. She wrote a book that changed my life called, “Stay: A History of Suicide and the Arguments Against It.” She argues that to say that there is no meaning to life, or that we have to make our own meaning seems misguided and that meaning has always been a part of community and culture, we need not invent it. She earned her Ph.D. from Columbia University in the History of Science and European Cultural History. She is the author of 3 other books, including “Doubt: A History: The Great Doubters and Their Legacy of Innovation from Socrates and Jesus to Thomas Jefferson,” and “The Happiness Myth: The Historical Antidote to What Isn't Working Today.”

Episode 48 Dan Arel

Cass Midgley and Dr. Bob Pondillo interview journalist, author, blogger Dan Arel. His work is seen on AlterNet, Huff Post, and Patheos as Danthropology.  He’s written for The American Ahteist Magazine and the Richard Dawkins Foundation. Dan has written a book called, “Parenting Without God: How to Raise Moral, Ethical, and Intelligent Children, Free from Religious Dogma.”  Dan is also the blogger who gained recognition from his op ed on the Ken Ham/Bill Nye debate as well as the Creation Museum’s attempt to use Kentucky tax dollars to build Noah’s Ark. Dan is a serious mover and shaker in the secular movement. We think you’ll benefit from getting to know him.

Today’s show is unlike anything we’ve ever or ever will do again. As you may know, Cass was an evangelical Christian the first 39 years of his life and a minister for the last 20 of that. Bob never believed. They got together because they were both fascinated with the anthropology of why humans need God. Today, they examine an artifact of Cass' theism. They are going to play a 45 minute sermon that Cass orated in late 2005 in a small charismatic church in north Texas. What is captured on tape here is the last waning year of Cass' Christian faith, This is the last sermon he ever gave, and a perceptive ear will hear, although couched in Christian language and laden with scripture references, the mental migration he was making toward humanism, naturalism, and agnosticism. It would about 6 to 7 more years before he had embraced full on atheism. and eventually anti-theism.

Some will be unable to get through it for various reasons. It will bring back memories and emotions for some post-Christians. It might be torturous for some (as it was for Cass) and humorous for others. We just invite you to notice what you notice. Like most charismatic preachers, it gets more and more emotional in time.

Bob and Cass do a brief intro and follow with about 15 minutes of commentary. We hope, as always, this experience stretches you as a human being.

Episode 46 Eli aka prplfox

Cass and Bob interview Eli, a YouTuber that goes by the name Purple Fox. Eli got saved at a Young Life camp as a teenager but by the time he was 20 was convinced it was all untrue and yet still found himself in ministry. His journey is described in detail in a YouTube series called Deconversion parts 1 thru 6.  This episode hits the bullseye of what this podcast is all about.

The deconversion process can be very traumatic.  Christianity is an identity-forming idea and Eli conveys just how devastating it can be to emerge as a young adult and realize your identity is not real. In the mid-2000s, Eli couldn’t understand why more people weren’t talking about this, so he made the videos. 10 years later, the web is packed with ex-Christian material and as the recent Pew research shows: Christianity is shrinking and those leaving their religious affiliation is booming.

The first hour is our talk with Eli, followed by Bob and Cass' commentary.

Episode 45 Chris Seathinheathin

Cass and Bob interview Chris SeathinHeathin, a local podcaster that we met at ReAsonCon the last weekend in April.  We taped this conversation on May 2nd, 2015.

Chris was an “apatheist” most of his life and didn’t feel the need to express his atheism until he noticed the culture-sprawl of creeping Christian dominionism, to which he retorted by starting the podcast, Unbuckling the Bible Belt.

Chris doesn’t have a post-Christian story, but they discuss binge-drinking, social awkwardness, being a book-nerd history buff and topics from MLK to NSA to NRA to “what is a man?” It’s a bit of a detour from the regular format.  It’s at least a window into another human story that is always uniquely fascinating.

The irony within this episode is Bob and Chris critique how ill-informed people often talk too much without having the proper knowledge to do so, and yet I (Cass) am the perfect example of that.

Also, a point I think this conversation raises is that Bob and Chris are life-long non-theists and I was a Christian til 40. I honestly didn't care about "worldly" things--news, world events, history, etc. I only cared about Godly things, things that involved the Kingdom of God. I'm very learned in Scripture and theological topics (which is normally what the podcast is about). This episode exposes my lack of knowledge of the world, and serves as a reminder why are podcast is not topical, but about individual's religious journeys.

Episode 44 - Mandisa Thomas

Today our guest is Mandisa L. Thomas, the President of Black NonBelievers Inc.  This is the first in a series of interviews I conducted at the American Atheist convention in Memphis, Easter weekend.  I sat down with Mandisa as she was manning the Black Nonbelievers table at the Conference.  The background noise is constant so put on your loud barroom conversation ears and you’ll hear every word.

As a description of the function Black Nonbelievers, she writes on the website, “Those of us that do not believe in God are all around you.  We’re everyday people, just trying to live normal lives like everyone else.  We’re your neighbors, students, employees, employers and entrepreneurs. A good many of us are also sitting next to you in religious institutions – either in doubt about their faith, or have given it up altogether. But because serious consequences could occur as a result of going public with their nonbelief – including being shunned by friends and family – they sit in silence and pretend to agree with something they no longer believe is true. And that’s where we come in. We exist not as an alternative, but as a primary support system. Whether you are fully out as a nonbeliever, still questioning your faith, or even if you have to pretend to go with the flow, but need a safe place to vent – we are here for you.”

This was an intense interview for me because of how ignorant I feel as a white, privileged male.  I know you’re going to notice my inherent racism in this conversation. Mandisa was very graceful to my blind-spots and I absolutely loved talking to her. I think there’s a lot here for everyone.  My talk with Mandisa is 44 minutes, followed by commentary with Bob for 27 minutes. --Cass Midgley

Episode 42 - Tracey Moody

Guest: Blogger and atheist activist Tracey Moody. Very candid interview. Tracey was never a believer. Part of Tracey’s freedom and fearlessness comes from never having been trained under theism. Instead Tracey looked to science for answers and meaning. Tracey’s now famous question at the Creation Debate b/w Ken Ham and Bill Nye was, “What, if anything, would ever you change your mind?” It’s a good question for all of us. This interview was taped on April 13th, 2015.

Episode 40 - Atheist Debater Justin Schieber

Atheist debater Justin Schieber is a young, brilliant self-taught student of Philosophy and Religion.  You can find his debates on YouTube.  Justin is a thinker who uses debate to invigorate the conversation, not end it; to expand our knowledge and enhance our understanding of the "other" perspective.  This episode is an intellectual conversation. It is followable and everyone should be able to get something out of it.

We taped this show on March 27th, 2015 on a field recorder so its not our regular standard of quality and the memory card filled up after about an hour so it ends rather abruptly.  When we realized what happened we just did the closer questions on Justin’s iPhone and wrapped it up.

I’m not as I was.  Something I urgently felt I ought to do or say…and one mustn’t repine or give in to self pity about that, but at this present moment I have to say, I feel very envious of someone who is young and actively starting out in this argument.  Just think of the extraordinary things that are happening to us. Go, for example, to the Smithsonian museum (I hope you’ve done this) to the new hall of human origins-- magnicificanty curated in a new exhibition--which shows, among other things, the branch, or branches along which perhaps three, certainly three, maybe four if you count Indonesia, humanoid, shall we say, anthropoid species died out not very long ago, within mearuable distance of 75,000 years or so.  Possibly destroyed by us, possibly not, we don’t know.  We know they decorated their graves.  We think they probably had language ability.  We don't know if they had souls (I'm sorry I cant help you there).  But I so envy those who could glimpse...I've only mentioned three or four of the things that have magnetized and charmed and gratified me to think about in the recent past, and how much I hope that each of you form some such ambition this evening and carries it forward.  In the meantime, we had the same job we always had, to say as thinking people and as humans that there are no final solutions, there is no absolute truth, there is no supreme leader, there is no totalitarian solution, that says if you would just give up your freedom of inquiry, if you would just give up, if you would simply abandon your critical faculties the world of idiotic bliss can be yours but we have to begin by repudiating all such claims.  Grand rabbis, chief ayatollahs, infallible popes, the peddlers of surrogate and mutant, quasi-political religion and worship. The Dear Leader, the Great Leader, we have no need for any of this.  And looking at them and their record and the pathos of their supporters, I realize that it is they who are the grand imposters.  And my own imposture this evening was mild by comparison.  Thank you very much.  –Christopher Hitchens, 2011

Episode 34 Fred Rich: Christian Nation

Our guest is Fred Rich, author of the dystopian novel, “Christian Nation.” Fred is a polymath, who studied politics and policy at Princeton’s Woodrow Wilson School and pursued graduate work in moral philosophy as a Keasbey Scholar at King’s College, Cambridge. He practiced law for the past 30 years.  Newly retired, he splits his time between Manhattan and New York’s Hudson Valley where he is working on a non-fiction book about environmental politics, and several other novels.

Although this book, Christian Nation, is fiction, it does not stretch reality, it is not a conspiracy theory, it lays out exactly how, through legitimate legal means, America could become a Christian Theocracy.  The wall of separation is vulnerable. In the spirit of Philip Roth's The Plot Against America, one of America's foremost lawyers lays out in chilling detail what such a future might look like: constitutional protections dismantled; all aspects of life dominated by an authoritarian law called "The Blessing," enforced by a reconfigured Internet known as the "Purity Web." Those who defy this system, among them the narrator, live on the edges of society, sustained by the belief that democracy will rise to triumph over such tyrannical oppression.

Episode 21 - Frank Schaeffer

Bob & Cass interview Frank Schaeffer about his latest book, "Why I'm an Atheist Who Believes in God."  Once we get past that fact that semantically those words are mutually exclusive, an odd conversation can happen.   This paradox, this tension, especially for those who were raised religious and are no longer, can stick in your head for decades.  Perhaps some just can't completely shut the coffin on God?  "Spiritual but not religious."  How much space can remain for the possibility of a "god" or Prime Mover once one denies all supernaturalism, magic, superstition, and fully accepts Darwin's theory of evolution?  Is it anything more than feelings or wishful thinking?

Episode 5 - Julia

You're gonna envy Julia's mother's side of the family, nee Divine.  Julia paints a picture of family reunions full of laughter, singing, and cimematic characters.  And how they reacted to her "coming out" as lesbian.  The patriarchal side is not so funny.  Julia's father sexually abused her for most of her childhood.  We talk about the notion of God being "father" and how that image obviously doesn't work for some.  Listen for how Julia finds her way through the maze of the sacred and the profane into a place of self-acceptance and her own spirituality.

Episode 4 - Mary

Mary was in Cass' youth group as a teenager.  Both have sojourned out of religion.  Now Mary finds herself back working under a Methodist umbrella as a bridge-builder, community-builder.  Its all about love for Mary.  We talk about being good without God, the inter-connectedness of all things, and God being the space between us all.  Her background is anti-religious and yet she finds herself able to work her magic with the institution of organized religion.

Episode 3 - Ben

Ben comes from a United Pentecostal background.  He considers himself a humanist.  Ben is the least angry person you'll meet regarding his religious background.   He loves Jonathan Haidt, considers himself to have a conservative brain, and amicable towards all points of view.

Episode 1 - Dr. Pondillo intro episode

Bob is a man still redefining himself after 60+ years of successes and failures.  He's a dreamer, a creator, a screenwriter, an avid reader and ironically intrigued with religion, even as a lifelong atheist.  He doesn't have a mean or angry bone in his body.  His story is one of close-calls, near misses, and yet he gets up, dusts himself off and looks for the next thing.  Gotta love him.

Episode 2 - Cass Midgley intro episode

In the second installment of the hosts interviewing each other, Bob interviews Cass.  Cass is a narcissist extraordinaire and loves to talk about himself.  Bob barely gets a word in edgewise.  One little question and Cass goes for days, linking thought upon thought til only the keenest listener can make sense of it.  How Cass got his nickname, his religious timeline, his kinky babysitter, his porn habit, his exit from Christianity and how his life hangs by a thread to the teachings of Hitchens, Camus, and Nietzsche.  Cass gets more and more inebriated as the show progresses.  He's slurring words, advising as a presumptious expert, and is clueless to how embarrassed the rest of feel for him, and how he should feel for himself.
